The photo of Governor Pence of Indiana with the “religious” people made my skin crawl.  My ancestors came to New Amsterdam in 1625 to escape people dressed exactly like that, and to live with freedom of conscience.  These are the very people, who were trying to squelch the rights of my ancestors, and they’re still at it 400 years later.  Beware!

REMEMBER:  Tyranny is tyranny, whether it comes in Red Coats, Blue Pinstripes, or White Starched Wimpoles

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

1st Amendment to The Constitution of the United States

As Americans, each of us knows what the Meaning of America is.  Nowhere has that fact been more apparent than in Indiana, when the Indianapolis Star published the words “Fix This – Now” on ½ of their entire front page on March 31, 2015.  The editors knew that the so-called “Religious Freedom Restoration Act” was just the opposite, and a threat to our liberties as Americans.  They knew in the marrow of their bones that Governor Pence and the Indiana legislature had lost the Meaning of America entirely.

We already have religious freedom guaranteed us by The Constitution of the United States since December 15, 1791.  We need neither clarification nor restoration.  These are our Constitutional Rights, and the very basis upon which the Meaning of America has been built for over 220 years.

When we hear that someone is proposing a bill that relates to one of our basic Freedoms, including our Rights of Due Process of Law and Equal Protection of the Law, our antennae should immediately go up.  Almost certainly, they are looking for a way to restrict our Freedoms.

Someone asked me on Twitter, “How are your rights being violated?”  The issue isn’t whether my rights are being violated.  The issue is, “What happens if we allow such laws to go on the books?”  Allowing one discrimination can allow many, and soon we will have religions that forbid you to wear a blue shirt on Wednesdays, or something preposterous like that.  This is not so far fetched, since there are oligarchies in the world where the style of attire is specifically dictated by the government in the name of religion.

Our Constitutional Rights are fundamental to our understanding of the Meaning of America, and any tampering with them should immediately give rise to suspicion.

The great thing about what happened in Indiana, however, is that it “outed” Republicans, who have been up to no constitutional good for a couple of decades now.  They have passed hundreds of bills related to our fundamental freedoms and rights at the state level, which do not attract national attention.  With money to burn, they can leave the façade of The Constitution of the United States, and try to take away those rights at the state level.  Then we are left with nothing to do but challenge these in the courts, at great expense.

At one level, the challenges are a good thing, because they do cause all of the issues to be vetted through our political and judicial process.  They are the hammers with which the impurities of our political system are beaten out of the system on the anvil of our fundamental Meaning of America.  Each test makes the United States stronger, like steel, because we let no detail go unchallenged.

But, we as The American People do not have to wait for the hammer to meet anvil.  We can short circuit the process by catching the Republicans at their nefarious games, and vote them out of office.  We should do that at the very next opportunity.  They clearly do not care about the Meaning of America, which brought our ancestors to The New World.  What they care about is how they can dominate us and make us slaves to oligarchy and patriarchy once again.

Whenever we hear a grandiose title like “The Freedom of this or that bill,” we should immediately be put on our guard that somewhere in that long bill with the small print is a provision to take away the very Rights we expect our government to defend and maintain for us.
